STEM Academic Specialist (Grades 6–12)
We’re looking for a part-time STEM Academic Specialist to support middle and high school students in math and science. You’ll do more than reteach content. You’ll find out why a student is stuck, whether that’s a conceptual gap, a processing difference, or an executive function issue showing up as a “math problem.” Then you’ll work with the rest of our team to address it.
Every session is one-on-one and lasts at least an hour, so you’ll have time to do real work with each student, not 30-minute drop-ins. You’ll help set your own part-time schedule, with sessions at our center, on school campuses, and in students’ homes. Pay is $35-$40/hour.
You’ll join a collaborative team of reading, executive function, and speech specialists who share what they know, so you’ll grow well beyond your own subject. And you’ll work for leadership that runs the business transparently and puts students at the center of every decision.
What You’ll Do
Lead one-on-one sessions of 60 minutes or more in math (pre-algebra through calculus) and science (biology, chemistry, physics), tailored to how each student learns
Contribute to diagnostic assessments and help build each student’s intervention plan
Collaborate regularly with our reading, executive function, and speech specialists so each student’s support stays coordinated
Track progress and adjust instruction based on data, not guesswork
Communicate clearly and honestly with families, and with schools when appropriate
Help students build confidence and independence, not just pass the next test
Requirements
A valid Arizona IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card
Reliable transportation for sessions at our center, school campuses, and student homes
A bachelor’s degree in a STEM field, education, or a related area [teaching certification preferred/required]
2+ years of experience teaching or tutoring students in grades 6–12
Who You Are
You can explain the same concept five different ways, and you’re curious about which one will land
You see students as whole people, not a list of deficits
You’re comfortable adapting to different settings, whether that’s a classroom, our center, or a family’s kitchen table
You like working on a team and know that the best ideas often come from colleagues outside your specialty
Bonus Points
Experience with neurodivergent or twice-exceptional learners
Familiarity with IEPs, 504 plans, or special education settings
Background in math intervention approaches (e.g., concrete-representational-abstract instruction)
Experience with test prep (SAT/ACT, AP)
Compensation
$35 - $40 hourly
Sophos Academics is an integrated tutoring company serving students ages 5 to 18 in Arizona. We specialize in reading intervention, math support, executive function coaching, and speech/OT therapy, all delivered by a collaborative team working from a single plan for each student.
I started Sophos because struggling students shouldn’t have to piece together support from five places that never talk to each other. After 15+ years in education, I’d watched too many bright, capable kids fall through the cracks between providers. So we built something different.
Every student begins with a diagnostic assessment that looks for root causes, not just symptoms. From there, our specialists build one individualized plan and keep talking to each other, to families, and to schools, so nothing gets siloed. We run the business with complete transparency: families always know exactly what they’re getting and why.
Every student can learn. The approach just has to fit the student.
