A Chicago-based divorce and family-law firm is seeking a reliable, discreet, and highly organized Private Process Server / Civil Investigator to support attorneys and clients in contested and high-conflict domestic-relations matters.

The successful candidate will handle service of process throughout Chicago and the surrounding suburbs, document findings clearly, and provide dependable courtroom-ready documentation.

Compensation and Schedule

• Per-assignment arrangements may be considered.

• Compensation will be commensurate with experience, licensing status, availability, and scope of responsibilities.

• Mileage and approved case-related expenses will be reimbursed in accordance with firm policy.

• Personally serve summonses, subpoenas, petitions, motions, restraining-order materials, and other legal documents in compliance with Illinois law and court rules.

• Plan and conduct service attempts at residences, workplaces, businesses, and other appropriate locations.

• Prepare accurate affidavits of service, detailed attempt logs, photographs, location notes, and other supporting records.

• Locate individuals, verify addresses and employment information, and identify potential witnesses or assets.

• Conduct lawful field observations and document findings through clear reports, photographs, video, and contemporaneous notes when appropriate.

• Communicate professionally and discreetly with attorneys, staff, clients, witnesses, and court personnel.

• Maintain strict confidentiality and secure handling of sensitive client information.

• Testify, when necessary, regarding service efforts, investigative methods, observations, and documentation.

• Meet deadlines, including time-sensitive and emergency service requests.

Required Qualifications

• Experience as a process server, private investigator, civil investigator, paralegal investigator, law-enforcement investigator, or similar role.

• Working knowledge of service-of-process requirements and practical service methods in Cook County and surrounding Illinois counties.

• Familiarity with Illinois family-law litigation, domestic-relations practice, or civil litigation is strongly preferred.

• Strong written communication skills, including the ability to prepare concise, factual affidavits and investigative reports.

• Excellent judgment, discretion, patience, and attention to detail.

• Ability to work independently, manage multiple assignments, and respond promptly to attorneys and staff.

• Valid driver’s license, dependable vehicle, smartphone, and ability to travel throughout Chicago and the metropolitan area.

• Comfortable working varied hours, including early mornings, evenings, and occasional weekends, as assignments require.

• Ability to maintain the professional standards required for sensitive legal work.

Preferred Qualifications

• Established knowledge of Chicago neighborhoods, Cook County suburbs, local courthouses, and regional service patterns.

• Experience with skip tracing, asset research, witness location, public-record research, and lawful surveillance.

• Experience preparing court-ready reports and providing testimony.

• Spanish language skills are a plus.
