Paralegal
Law Office of Gary S. Austin • Remote
Posted 15 hours ago
We're building toward a 30-person firm, which means there is room for strong performers to grow in responsibility, specialization, and compensation.
Our standards are straightforward: clarity, credibility, preparation, responsiveness, transparency, and accountability.
We tell clients what they need to know, not simply what they want to hear. We prepare carefully. We meet deadlines. When something goes wrong, we communicate, take responsibility, and fix it.
HIRING PROCESS
Application and required screening questions.
15-minute phone interview for selected applicants.
Short written exercise that will include complete writing samples.
45-minute video interview.
Offer.
Please apply through this posting only. We are not accepting direct phone calls or emails regarding this position.
Most law firms make their paralegals feel like document processors. That's not what we're building here.
Gary Austin Law handles divorce and child custody cases — work that directly affects people's lives. We tell clients the truth about their cases, prepare every filing as if it will be scrutinized, and expect our work to hold up in court.
We're not trying to be the biggest firm. We want to be the most prepared firm in the room.
We're growing toward $6M in revenue and a 30-person team by the end of 2026. We're looking for an experienced family-law paralegal who can take ownership of substantive work and grow with us.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
Draft petitions, responses, motions, declarations, requests for orders, and other family-law documents.
Manage multiple active cases, court deadlines, and tracking systems.
Communicate with clients to gather information, obtain documents, answer appropriate questions, and provide updates.
Conduct legal research involving statutes, court rules, procedures, and case law.
Prepare exhibits and other materials for hearings.
Identify deadlines and problems before they become emergencies.
Communicate proactively when circumstances change or something is off track.
Record your billable time accurately every working day.
We are not asking what you need to learn in order to become a paralegal. We are asking how an already experienced paralegal intends to become better.
WHAT WORKING HERE REQUIRES
Family law is demanding. Clients may be stressed, angry, frightened, or overwhelmed. Court deadlines don't change because the week became busy. This is a remote position. Nobody will be checking on you every hour. We expect you to know what is on your plate, meet deadlines, communicate when something needs attention, and follow through. If you need someone to tell you exactly what to do throughout the day, this position isn't a fit. If you take pride in knowing your cases, staying ahead of deadlines, producing accurate work, and being someone the team doesn't have to chase, you may fit very well here.
THREE THRESHOLD REQUIREMENTS
This position has three requirements that are not preferences:
Substantial family-law experience.
We are primarily seeking candidates with substantive family-law experience in California, Nevada, Arizona, or New Mexico. California experience is preferred.
Actual billable-hour experience.
You must already understand contemporaneous timekeeping and be accustomed to recording your billable work throughout the working day.
Independence.
You must be able to manage assignments and deadlines, identify problems, ask appropriate questions, and follow work through to completion without repeated reminders or step-by-step supervision.
These are threshold requirements, not preferences.
WHO SHOULD NOT APPLY
Please do not apply if you lack substantial family-law experience in one of the jurisdictions above, have never worked under billable-hour requirements, or require frequent supervision to complete assignments.
This is not a training position. We will train you on our firm's systems, procedures, and California-specific practices where necessary. We are not hiring someone to teach from the beginning how to perform substantive family-law paralegal work.
Compensation
27 - 38 hourly
Our Values (How This Shows Up in Practice)
- Clarity: We explain the process, deadlines, and risks in plain language. Clients always know what is happening and what comes next.
- Credibility: Filings are accurate. Deadlines are met. Court expectations are respected. Our work holds up under scrutiny.
- Confidence: Preparation drives decisions. We act decisively and do not avoid hard conversations or contested issues.
- Transparency: Clients receive timely updates and honest assessments, not false reassurance.
- Responsiveness: Cases move because communication and follow-through happen quickly.
- Accountability: We own our work, and clients are expected to meet their responsibilities as well.
Who Does Well Here
Attorneys who like ownership, structure, and high standards succeed here. People who want clear responsibility and authority thrive. This is not a place for attorneys who need constant oversight, avoid decisions, or prefer to stay in the background.
