Managing Divorce Attorney

MFR Men's & Fathers' Rights Divorce Lawyers | Schultz & Associates, LLC • Hackensack, NJ, US

We are a fast-growing divorce and family law firm in Northern NJ seeking a highly experienced and dynamic Managing Attorney to join our team to help Men and Fathers obtain the legal and parental justice they are entitled to and deserve when going through a divorce or other family law matter.

We are seeking a positive and enthusiastic advocate who does not work by the clock. You should be able to write a motion or legal brief with flair and clarity, develop legal case strategies and legal theories with no supervision, and can relate and break down into simple terms complicated laws to both the client and your internal team members, all with ease and grace. Also, for the most part, you should have a good reputation in that opposing counsel or experts who know you respect your legal abilities, and you can get along with 99.9% of those you encounter.

You might be the right fit if you are someone who takes pride in your work for your own benefit (but also understands the firm wants to look good too), has personal and professional integrity, and is willing to work until the job is done, including weekends, and working nights when necessary.

It might very well be that you are currently in a role that is just "okay"; it might be that you have your own law firm (or thought about it) but don't love the day-to-day management of law practice. It might be that you are simply bored with your current circumstances-- or maybe you are yearning for some independence and autonomy in your area of expertise! If any of these resonate with you, then someone like you aligns with our mission; we built our law firm around helping people move forward to where they want to be to something better.

We have a top-notch support and an administrative team in place to ensure you are always supported, and not bound by time-consuming admin work. So, all you can focus on is handling the clients and providing outstanding client service, along with imposing your legal brilliance and advocacy onto the clients, the Courts, opposing counsel, and junior associates!

Our Managing Attorney must:

  • Exude empathy, while exhibiting assertiveness when the situation calls for it.
  • Be comprehensive and thorough; you don't like leaving things up to chance and will explain, re-explain, and clarify proactively to prevent any unintended misunderstandings.
  • Understand that the court rules exist to be followed but can find creative arguments in any case law.
  • Thrive on details and your short and long-term memory is sharp and intact.
  • Love “being right” and love to prove it to yourself, while also being okay with learning something new.
  • Embrace all technology (hardware and software) knowing that it’s better to work smarter, not harder.
  • Be a well-respected advocate with a high level of personal and professional integrity ethics; you are okay with having an egg on your face sometimes if you learn and grow from the experience.
  • Not think any task is “beneath you" -- if it gets the job done.
  • Be a valued team member.
  • Be able to build positive and collaborative relationships internally and externally.
  • Achieve Key Performance Indicators consistently and efficiently.
  • Think in terms of outlines, chronologies, and indexes.
  • Be able to see an opportunity for clarification and organization where other people see a mess.
  • Be an amazing and creative writer with a sickening degree of attention to detail.
  • Be an awesome juggler of tasks and can change gears quickly.
  • Practice specifically family law because you just "get it."
  • Pride yourself on high-quality work.
  • Wants to practice law in a supportive and friendly work environment that will consider your personal, professional, and financial goals.
  • Communicate with clients and staff clearly and timely and exceed expectations in providing client service.

If you fit the bill for a Managing Attorney, we will know so because you come with a book of business, even if the same is not significant in size. If you originate cases, you will be entitled to an origination bonus, in addition to base compensation.

  • Provide legal services including legal research, drafting motions, pleadings, orders, judgments, and status updates, overseeing, and analyzing discovery, and appearing in court for motions, conferences, and trials.
  • Maintain a reduced personal caseload of complex or high-profile cases, while also managing the pipeline of cases and supervising and developing Associates.
  • Oversee, counsel, guide, train, and mentor Junior Associates and Contract Attorneys and assigned paralegals, including managing workflow, assigning work, and reviewing work products.
  • Conduct regular case conferences with Associates to ensure strategic planning and answer questions.
  • Handle client complaints about legal issues related to their matters and work with assigned Junior Attorneys to ensure resolution.
  • Ensure attorneys and paralegals meet deadlines and targets for billables and collections (yours as well!).
  • Conduct performance evaluations and make recommendations for recruitment, hiring, promotion, and termination in consultation with the Owner and Firm Managing Director.
  • Monitor the case pipeline and work with the Owner and Managing Director to ensure efficient and effective daily operations of the Firm.
  • Draft and deliver staff performance reviews quarterly, lead monthly legal team meetings, and conduct monthly 1:1s with legal team members.
  • Facilitate internal case review meetings, attend admin team meetings, and attend all meetings with the leadership team.
  • Review team metrics, provide matter status updates to clients, and triage and support the Billing Specialist for those clients in non-payment status as needed.
  • Review your daily task-oriented reminders and deadlines, prioritize workload, and provide timely and relevant legal services to clients.
  • Supervise the legal team, manage, and review their tasks and workflow, and conduct daily stand-up meetings with the legal team.

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.
  • An active law license that is in good standing with the State of New Jersey (proof will be required)
  • Minimum Ten (10) plus years of experience practicing law, with 95% or more of your practice devoted to only Divorce Family law.
  • Proven experience in managing and supervising Associates and support staff.
  • Strong legal research, storytelling writing, negotiation, and courtroom advocacy skills.
  • Excellent organizational, time management, and leadership skills.
  • Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
