A growing California, Missouri (Jefferson City area) law firm is looking for a Legal Billing & Collections Specialist who can combine accuracy, persistence, judgment, and genuine client care. You will help ensure invoices are paid, retainers remain funded, payments are posted correctly, and accounts requiring escalation do not quietly fall through the cracks.

This is not a back-office role for someone who wants to enter numbers and avoid the telephone. You will have respectful but direct conversations about money, follow established procedures, document every step, and coordinate closely with the legal team when a client's account affects continued work on a matter.

The right person is tactful without being timid, persistent without being abrasive, and detail-oriented without losing sight of the client relationship.

Responsibilities

Make sure any billing inquiries are resolved by working with the client’s accounting department
Run accounts receivable reports to keep track of past due accounts and follow up on payment
Apply incoming payments to the correct accounts and keep accurate financial records
Distribute initial invoices for attorney review every month
Revise invoices in accordance with attorney requests and prepare final bills for mailing

Qualifications

Experience in legal billing or accounting, particularly within a law firm setting.

Two years of experience working as in a billing specialist position at a law firm
Competency with computer programs such as MS Office, Excel, and billing software is essential
Ability to handle multiple projects at a time and meet deadlines
Excellent written and verbal communication skills and organizational skills are needed in this role
