WhitsonLaw is growing, and we are looking for an experienced Family Law Paralegal to join our dedicated legal team.

Our legal professionals take their work seriously because they understand how deeply family law matters affect the lives of the people we serve. We are looking for a paralegal who shares that sense of responsibility and brings the experience, professionalism, accountability, and follow-through that clients and attorneys depend upon.

As a WhitsonLaw Paralegal, you will work closely with our attorneys to help manage active family and matrimonial matters from assignment through completion. You must be available to work 40 hours per week and have meaningful experience supporting an active New York family law practice.

If you take pride in doing important work well and want to contribute to a hardworking, collaborative family law practice, we want to hear from you!

  • Manage and maintain assigned case files so that documents, correspondence, case information, deadlines, and work in progress are accurate, organized, and current.

  • Support attorneys in moving matters forward by tracking assignments, upcoming deadlines, court appearances, outstanding information, and other necessary next steps.

  • Monitor court and case communications, identify time-sensitive developments, and ensure that appearances, filing deadlines, and other important dates are promptly and accurately calendared.

  • Prepare and e-file pleadings, motions, proposed orders, affidavits, and other documents appropriate to the paralegal role.

  • Prepare discovery demands and responses, Statements of Net Worth, and other financial and evidentiary materials used in family and matrimonial matters.

  • Assist attorneys with hearing and trial preparation, including organizing case materials, exhibits, evidence, pleadings, and other information needed for effective preparation.

  • Communicate regularly and professionally with clients to provide appropriate updates, obtain information and documents, follow up on outstanding requests, and help clients understand what is needed from them.

  • Follow assigned work through completion, including identifying when attorney review, signature, filing, service, client action, or another final step remains outstanding.

  • Communicate proactively when competing priorities, missing information, workload, or another obstacle may affect the timely completion of an assignment.

  • Record time contemporaneously and accurately for all work performed, with entries that clearly communicate the substantive work completed and progress made on the matter.

  • Stay current on developments in New York family and matrimonial law and participate in continuing professional development.

  • For experienced or senior-level hires, help train and mentor less-experienced paralegals and legal assistants and contribute to consistent, high-quality legal production across the team.

  • New York Family Law Paralegal experience is required. You should understand the terminology, documents, deadlines, court processes, and day-to-day demands of family and matrimonial matters.

  • Strong client-relations experience is essential. You must be comfortable working with clients who may be navigating stressful, emotional, and consequential circumstances.

  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple active matters, assignments, and deadlines concurrently while maintaining organization and attention to detail.

  • Strong judgment about priorities and the ability to recognize when competing demands, missing information, or capacity constraints need to be communicated or escalated.

  • A high degree of ownership and follow-through. You do not assume that a task is complete simply because your portion is finished; you remain attentive to the next step necessary to move the work forward.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate clearly and professionally with attorneys, clients, courts, opposing counsel, and other members of the legal team.

  • Exceptional accuracy and attention to detail, particularly when working with court dates, deadlines, pleadings, financial information, client records, and filings.

  • Strong practical proficiency with technology and cloud-based case-management and document-management platforms.

  • Proficiency with commonly used business and legal applications, including Microsoft Word, Google Workspace, calendar applications, and Adobe Acrobat Pro. The existing job description also identifies experience with Clio Grow, Clio Manage, and Family Law Software as a plus.

  • Ability and willingness to learn and consistently use the Firm's systems, workflows, and Case Management practices.

  • Professionalism, reliability, and sound judgment throughout the workweek. We expect every client, matter, and assignment to receive the same level of care and attention, whether it reaches you Monday morning or late Friday afternoon.

  • A genuine understanding that family law work has real consequences for the clients we serve and their families, and a commitment to approaching that responsibility with care, discretion, urgency, and professionalism.
