Family Law Attorney — Part-Time Contract (Matrimonial & Family Court) job

Be a lawyer. We’ll handle the rest.

New York Family Law & Mediation PLLC, a collegial divorce and family law firm based in Forest Hills, is looking for a part-time contract attorney to carry matrimonial and Family Court matters from start to finish — including in-person appearances in Queens, Kings, Bronx, Richmond, New York, Suffolk, and Nassau Counties. It's not necessary that you go to all of these counties.

This is the rare contract role built for attorneys who love practicing law but not the overhead that comes with it. You own your matters — strategy, drafting, client contact, court — while the firm’s case managers and paralegals handle scheduling, filings, billing, and client administration. Every hour you work is an hour of actual lawyering. You’ll meet weekly with the firm’s owner to review your cases, so you’re collaborating with an experienced matrimonial attorney, never working in a vacuum. Start at 5–10 hours per week and grow your caseload as the firm grows — without marketing, intake, or chasing retainers. Work remotely except when you’re in court.

If you’re a solo looking to fill capacity, an experienced attorney who stepped back and wants meaningful part-time litigation, or a practitioner who wants steady family law work without building a book of business — this role was designed for you.

  • Carry assigned matrimonial and Family Court matters from intake through disposition — this is case ownership, not per diem coverage or document review

  • Appear in person in Supreme and Family Court, and report outcomes to the firm the same day

  • Draft or revise petitions, motions, stipulations, and supporting affidavits using firm templates and standards. We also have a paralegal that assists with drafting.

  • Communicate directly with clients and keep them informed at every stage of their matter

  • Negotiate with opposing counsel and participate in court conferences on behalf of firm clients

  • Work with your assigned case manager on scheduling, filings, and client administration

  • Attend a weekly case review with the firm’s owner

  • Keep contemporaneous time records and submit them on a weekly basis

  • Admitted to practice in New York and in good standing

  • Experience in matrimonial and/or Family Court practice (divorce, child support, custody, paternity)

  • Willing and able to appear in Supreme and Family Courts in person and remotely

  • Comfortable owning a file: managing the client, the calendar, and the follow-through

  • Responsive and reliable — same-day communication is how this firm runs

  • Able to provide a writing sample and professional references (required for consideration)

  • Spanish language skills are a plus

  • Malpractice coverage or willingness to be covered under firm policy

  • Comfortable with technology

Compensation

$125 – $150 per hour

We’re a matrimonial and family law firm in Forest Hills, New York — off the E and F lines at Kew Gardens/Union Turnpike. We handle contested and uncontested divorce, Family Court matters, prenuptial and postnuptial agreements, mediation, and QDROs.

Our attorneys work with case managers. The case managers maintain the attorney’s calendar, draft “light” legal documents, coordinate with clients and the court, assist with motion assembly, and file and download NYSCEF documents. We want our attorneys to do the legal work — that’s the whole design of the firm.

We are solution-oriented. No blame games here. If there’s a problem, we want to know about it quickly, resolve it, and then collaborate on how to make sure it doesn’t happen again.

Our culture is inclusive. We are a team, and we work like a team. We don’t do office politics. We don’t do drama — not in our case, not in the office.
