The Director translates financial results into clear explanations, identifies emerging risks, and recommends practical actions to strengthen financial performance and support CCCN’s mission.

Accounting and Financial Reporting

  • Lead daily accounting operations, including the general ledger, accounts payable and receivable, bank reconciliations, and payroll accounting and reconciliations in coordination with designated staff and service providers.

  • Manage monthly and year-end close processes; review journal entries, reconciliations, accruals, and supporting schedules to ensure complete and accurate records.

  • Prepare timely financial statements and management reports in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles applicable to nonprofit organizations, including budget variances and explanations of significant changes.

  • Maintain accurate accounting for restricted funds, grants, program costs, and shared expenses, with documented and consistent cost allocation methods.

Budgeting and Financial Planning

  • Lead preparation of the annual operating budget with the Executive Director and program leaders; provide supporting analysis for management and Board review.

  • Monitor budget-to-actual performance, update forecasts, and explain revenue, expense, staffing, and program cost trends.

  • Monitor cash flow, liquidity, receivables, and payment obligations; anticipate funding gaps and recommend corrective actions.

  • Evaluate the financial implications of new programs, grants, contracts, and staffing decisions; provide clear recommendations on affordability and sustainability.

Grants and Contract Financial Management

  • Oversee financial administration of grants and contracts, including budgets, expense tracking, reimbursement requests, financial reports, and supporting documentation.

  • Partner with program managers to meet funder reporting deadlines and ensure expenditures are allowable, appropriately allocated, and consistent with award terms.

  • Track reimbursement status, restricted balances, and grant commitments; identify and communicate compliance issues or funding shortfalls promptly.

Audit Readiness and Internal Controls

  • Serve as the primary finance contact for external auditors; coordinate the annual audit, prepare requested schedules, and maintain organized supporting records.

  • Coordinate preparation and timely submission of required financial and tax filings, including Form 990, with external professionals as appropriate.

  • Maintain and improve financial policies, approval procedures, segregation of duties, and access controls; recommend safeguards appropriate to the size of the finance team.

  • Address audit findings, track corrective actions, and promptly communicate material financial concerns to the Executive Director and appropriate Board representatives.

Leadership and Board Support

  • Supervise, coach, and develop finance staff; establish clear responsibilities, priorities, deadlines, and backup coverage for critical processes.

  • Assess finance staffing, training, and system needs; recommend resources necessary to sustain accurate reporting and effective operations.

  • Prepare financial materials and present results to the Executive Director, Treasurer, Finance and HR Committee, and Board of Trustees as requested.

  • Explain financial information to colleagues without accounting backgrounds and collaborate respectfully across departments.

  • Improve accounting systems, reporting tools, and workflows; maintain confidentiality and perform other duties consistent with the role.

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a closely related field.

  • At least seven years of progressively responsible accounting or finance experience, including at least three years supervising staff or leading an accounting or finance function.

  • Strong knowledge of accounting principles, financial reporting, budgeting, cash flow management, reconciliations, and internal controls.

  • Experience coordinating financial close and external audits, with the ability to perform and review accounting work directly.

  • Proficiency with accounting software and Microsoft Excel, including financial analysis and reporting; working knowledge of Microsoft Office and data management tools.
