Couples Therapist — Part-Time, Flexible Schedule

Full Heart Family Therapy in Ankeny is seeking an experienced couples therapist for a part-time position with room to grow.

We regularly receive couples counseling inquiries and are looking for a clinician who enjoys relationship work and can help us meet that need. This role offers an opportunity to build a couples-focused caseload within an established group practice, with administrative, scheduling, and billing support.

We are open to discussing a starting schedule of approximately 5–10 client appointments per week. This may be a good fit if you want to add a day or two of clinical work or gradually build toward a larger role. Your caseload may also include individual adults, depending on your interests and the practice’s needs.

Our practice values thoughtful clinical work, professional autonomy, and collaboration. We welcome therapists who bring a clear approach to helping couples address recurring conflict, emotional disconnection, communication difficulties, and relationship distress. Experience with infidelity and betrayal trauma is especially welcome.

  • Provide couples therapy using an established clinical approach suited to each couple’s needs.
  • Assess relationship concerns, treatment goals, and whether conjoint therapy is appropriate, including screening for intimate partner violence and coercive control.
  • Develop collaborative treatment plans and review progress with clients.
  • Help couples understand recurring interaction patterns and work toward changes in communication, emotional connection, and relationship functioning.
  • Provide individual therapy when appropriate to your experience and agreed caseload.
  • Complete clinical documentation and other required records accurately and on time.
  • Coordinate with the administrative team regarding scheduling, availability, and client needs.
  • Participate in clinical consultation and coordinate with other providers when appropriate and authorized.
  • Recognize when clients need additional services or a different level of care and assist with referrals.
  • Conduct intake and needs assessment of individuals, significant others, and family members by testing, interviewing, observing, and holding discussion sessions
  • Engage in planning, implementation, and evaluation of therapeutic treatment programs for each patient
  • Document patient records accurately and thoroughly in accordance with facility and licensing standards
  • Attend and participate in weekly scheduled Clinical Team meetings and collaborate with community agencies
  • Deliver mental health services to families, couples, individuals, and children by employing solution-focused counseling techniques
  • Master’s degree in marriage and family therapy, counseling, social work, or a related clinical field.
  • Current Iowa clinical license; independently licensed LMFT, LMHC, or LISW preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience providing couples therapy and a strong interest in making relationship work a substantial part of your caseload.
  • Training in an established couples therapy approach, such as Emotionally Focused Therapy or the Gottman Method, preferred; certification is welcome but not required.
  • Ability to assess relationship safety and determine when couples therapy is appropriate.
  • Strong clinical judgment, clear professional boundaries, and dependable documentation practices.
  • Ability to provide respectful, affirming care to clients across diverse identities, backgrounds, and relationship experiences.
  • Willingness to collaborate with colleagues while taking responsibility for your clinical work.
  • Experience treating infidelity or betrayal trauma is a plus.
  • Superb problem-solving and analytical skills are required, as well as outstanding interpersonal and communication skills
  • Additional certifications required: CPR, BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • Current and unrestricted state license as an LMFT (licensed marriage and family therapist) or equivalent
  • This position requires a high school diploma or GED equivalent and a bachelor’s degree in a field such as counseling or social work; we prefer a master’s degree
  • A minimum of 1-3 years of experience in a clinical setting working as a marriage and family therapist
