The CNC Operator II produces machined parts by independently operating computer numerical control (CNC) Punch, Plasma, and Laser combination machines with little to no supervision.

This position runs production lots, troubleshoots and edits code as necessary, keeps records, communicates with co-workers and managers regarding production runs, and maintains quality and safety standards. Responsible for operating one or more types of computer numeric- controlled production equipment. Selects appropriate settings and makes adjustments as necessary.

• Troubleshoot machine issues and perform tool changes, tool wear offsets, or change inserts.

• Identify opportunities to reduce machining time through process improvements.

• Understand, interpret, and edit programming code.

• Advise the maintenance department or supervisor of any machine issues, crashes, or needed repairs.

• Complete partial or pre-setups and tear-downs as assigned.

• Load and unload materials and parts manually or using appropriate equipment or tools.

• Independently operate CNC equipment and observe operations with focused attention.

• Operate grinding and related tools to remove excess material or burrs from surfaces.

• Assure quality by inspecting finished parts; report irregularities or tolerance deviations to supervisor or quality control personnel.

• Perform tool wear offsets or change inserts to meet tolerance requirements.

• Monitor progress toward and meet production goals.

• Follow, create, and help maintain work instructions; complete required daily paperwork.

• Maintain equipment and worksite by completing housekeeping, preventive maintenance, and daily inspection tasks.

• Responsible for properly identifying, labeling, and managing hazardous waste generated from machining operations, such as oils, coolants, and contaminated wipes.

• Ensure all waste is collected in properly labeled, closed containers and stored in designated hazardous waste areas.

• Report any spills, leaks, or damaged containers.

• Properly dispose of metal dust and slag as directed by Facilities and EH&S.

• Other duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities:

• Proficiency with CNC controls.

• Experience operating CNC punch, plasma, laser, or combination machines.

• Experience reading part prints or drawings and/or machining work orders.

• Experience using standard quality inspection tools and gauges.

• Ability to perform basic mathematical computations, including the ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, proportions, geometry, and trigonometry to practical situations.

• Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.

• Interpersonal communication skills are characterized by honest, professional, respectful communication and effective listening skills.

• High level of dependability.

• Flexibility with time and schedule, and availability for overtime.

Education and Experience:

• High school diploma or GED equivalent.

• 3–5 years of related experience.

Physical Requirements:

• Frequently required to sit and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.

• Occasionally required to sit and climb or balance.

• Must be able to occasionally lift and/or move up to 50+ pounds.

• Specific vision abilities required by this job include the ability to adjust focus.

• Adaptable and able to maintain performance in loud areas where machines frequently operate.
