Posted 8 hours ago

The Assistant Controller is a senior, hands-on corporate accounting position supporting GF Hotels & Resorts' multi-property hotel accounting organization. Building on the core responsibilities of the Staff Accountant role, the Assistant Controller independently manages more complex accounting assignments, reviews work, analyzes hotel financial results, supports Controllers and Regional Controllers, and helps drive accurate and timely completion of recurring deliverables.

The ideal candidate has at least one to two years of hospitality-industry accounting or finance experience, understands the Uniform System of Accounts for the Lodging Industry, 12th Revised Edition (USALI 12), and wants to continue learning and growing toward a Controller role. The position requires strong accounting fundamentals, initiative, sound judgment, curiosity, clear communication, effective follow-through, and the ability to connect property operations to the general ledger, balance sheet, P&L, cash position, and financial reporting process.

Operational Accounting & Cash Management

  • Own and review assigned property cash-flow forecast files, including actual activity, forecast assumptions, liquidity risks, and follow-up items.

  • Review cash sheets, bank activity, accounts payable activity, check runs, and other cash-management schedules for completeness and accuracy.

  • Prepare and review bank, cash, and credit-card reconciliations; ensure reconciling items are supported, assigned, and resolved promptly.

  • Analyze AP aging reports, recommend follow-up, support check-run decisions, and coordinate outstanding items with Controllers.

  • Support positive-pay, bank uploads, payment controls, and other banking processes as assigned. • Investigate discrepancies across source systems, banking activity, property reports, and accounting records; document conclusions and corrective actions.

  • Provide guidance to Staff Accountants on recurring cash-management and reconciliation processes.

General Ledger, Balance Sheet & Month-End Close

  • Prepare and review journal entries, accruals, account analyses, roll-forwards, and supporting schedules.

  • Prepare and review balance-sheet reconciliations, challenge aged or unsupported balances, and monitor resolution of open items.

  • Own assigned sections of the month-end close and ensure checklist items are completed accurately and on time.

  • Analyze P&L and balance-sheet results for unusual activity, classification issues, missing accruals, and period-over-period variances.

  • Apply USALI 12 principles when reviewing account classification, departmental reporting, undistributed operating expenses, non-operating activity, and other hotel financial-statement presentation.

  • Assist Controllers with month-end financial-statement review, variance analysis, and preparation of clear support for material items.

  • Ensure workpapers contain sufficient support, reviewer notes, ownership, and next steps.

Financial Analysis & Business Support

  • Analyze hotel operating results and identify trends, risks, opportunities, inconsistencies, and items requiring operational or accounting follow-up.

  • Prepare ad hoc analysis, schedules, and executive-ready summaries for the EVP of Finance, Vice Presidents, Regional Controllers, and Controllers.

  • Help translate accounting results into practical information for Operations and property leadership.

  • Support budgeting, forecasting, cash planning, and other financial-analysis initiatives as assigned.

Corporate Accounting & Organizational Support

  • Support senior Finance leadership with reporting, schedules, research, recurring corporate deliverables, and special projects.

  • Review or oversee assigned property lists, P&L cover sheets, accounting organization materials, trackers, document workflows, and recurring billings.

  • Support internal-audit billing and tracking, legal-invoice allocations, incentive schedules, check requests, management-fee or departmental billings, and property rebills as assigned.

  • Ensure corporate schedules and trackers reconcile to supporting records and remain current.

Payroll, Tax & Compliance Support

  • Prepare or review payroll accounting, payroll-related reconciliations, supplemental-pay activity, and payroll-service rebills as assigned.

  • Prepare or review sales, occupancy, and other tax-related schedules, checks, reconciliations, and trackers.

  • Support tax filings, audits, internal reviews, and information requests with complete and accurate documentation.

  • Reinforce approval, documentation, segregation-of-duties, and record-retention requirements.

  • Identify control gaps or recurring process failures and recommend practical corrective action. Property Transitions, Exits & Special Projects

  • Support accounting work for hotel transitions, openings, exits, wind-downs, and post-close properties.

  • Review assigned exit-billing, BAF, LMS, IBA, legal, or other transition-related schedules and trackers.

  • Coordinate open-bank-account activity, outstanding AP, cash activity, reconciliations, journal entries, and supporting documentation for exited properties as assigned.

  • Provide temporary accounting coverage for vacancies, transitions, peak workloads, and other resource needs.

  • Lead or participate in process-improvement, systems, automation, data-cleanup, and financial-research projects.

Team Support, Review & Development

  • Provide day-to-day technical assistance and coaching to Staff Accountants without replacing the accountability of the assigned Controller or manager.

  • Review assigned Staff Accountant work for accuracy, completeness, support, and adherence to deadlines.

  • Help develop process notes, standard operating procedures, templates, checklists, and training materials.

  • Promote cross-training, knowledge sharing, consistent execution, and continuous improvement.

  • Escalate higher-risk accounting, control, cash, deadline, or resource concerns promptly and with a recommended course of action.

RECURRING DELIVERABLES & CADENCE: Property and functional assignments may change based on portfolio needs. Typical deliverables include:

  • Daily/weekly: review cash and bank activity, cash sheets, cash-flow forecasts, AP aging and payment items, reconciliations, invoice or rebill tracking, and status of priority deliverables.

  • Monthly: lead assigned close activities; prepare or review reconciliations, journal entries, account analyses, P&L and balance sheet reviews, checklist completion, recurring billings, and Controller follow-up.

  • Quarterly/annual: incentive support, audit and tax documentation, annual allocations or rebills, forecasts, budget support, and other portfolio schedules.

  • As needed: transition and exit-property support, vacancy coverage, technical accounting research, financial analysis, process improvement, systems work, coaching, and special projects.

LEADERSHIP & ACCOUNTABILITY EXPECTATIONS

  • Own outcomes. Take responsibility for assigned processes from planning through completion, review, follow-up, and resolution.

  • Lead through expertise and example. Demonstrate accuracy, urgency, organization, professionalism, and a willingness to help others learn.

  • Review thoughtfully. Do more than check completion; evaluate support, reasonableness, classification, controls, and the financial-statement impact.

  • Communicate proactively. Acknowledge assignments, provide clear status updates, identify risks early, and tailor communication to the audience.

  • Use judgment. Distinguish routine items from higher-risk matters and escalate with relevant facts, prior research, and a recommended next step.

  • Deliver review-ready work. Ensure analyses, reconciliations, journal entries, check requests, and schedules are accurate, supported, organized, and understandable.

  • Develop others. Share knowledge, provide constructive coaching, and reinforce consistent processes and documentation.

  • Understand the business. Connect accounting activity to hotel operations, cash, internal controls, USALI 12 presentation, and property financial performance.

  • Keep learning. Seek feedback, expand technical and hotel-operating knowledge, and prepare for progressively broader Controller responsibility.

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Hospitality Finance, or a related discipline preferred, or equivalent relevant experience.

  • At least one to two years of accounting or finance experience in the hospitality industry required; hotel or multi-property experience strongly preferred.

  • Working knowledge of USALI 12 and the ability to apply hotel account classifications and departmental reporting concepts.

  • Experience with general-ledger accounting, journal entries, balance-sheet reconciliations, cash management, and month-end close.

  • Strong Microsoft Excel and Microsoft 365 skills, including the ability to work accurately with large schedules, formulas, reconciliations, and recurring templates.

  • Experience with M3, ProfitSword, hotel PMS platforms, AP systems, banking portals, or similar hotel-finance technology preferred.

  • Strong analytical, organizational, documentation, communication, and time-management skills.

  • Demonstrated desire to learn, accept coaching, grow technically, and progress toward a Controller role.

WORKING EXPECTATIONS
